DTF, screen printing or embroidery: which printing technique suits your clothing best?

You want to have clothing made for your company, event, association or brand. Your design is ready... but then comes the next question: do you choose DTF, screen printing or embroidery? And honestly? It's not always that simple.

Each technique has its own strengths. What works perfectly for a festival shirt, therefore, isn't automatically the best choice for workwear or hoodies. It depends on your design, the quantity, and the result you want to achieve.

In this article, I will explain the differences in a simple way, so you can better assess what fits best with your project.

What is DTF?

DTF stands for Direct To Film. With this method, a design is first printed on a special film and then heat-pressed onto the garment.

Sounds technical, but for you, it mainly means a lot of freedom in design and color.

When do you choose DTF printing?

DTF is especially useful when you:

  • need smaller quantities
  • want to create personalized items
  • have many details or colors in your design
  • want to be able to switch quickly
  • want to print on different types of textiles

DTF also works very well on dark clothing thanks to white ink under the print.

When is DTF less ideal?

For larger quantities, DTF usually becomes less interesting in terms of price. Each print is produced separately, which means the cost per item does not decrease as much.

In addition, a DTF print feels a bit smoother on the fabric. If you are looking for a very subtle or luxurious finish, other techniques may sometimes be a better match.

What is screen printing?

With screen printing, the ink is applied directly to the textile through a screen. A separate preparation is made for each color of the design.

This requires a bit more preparation, but it does ensure a strong and consistent result. That's why screen printing remains a popular choice for larger productions.

When do you choose screen printing?

Screen printing is a strong choice if you are working with larger quantities:

  • Ideal for larger quantities and repeat orders
  • Durable prints that stay beautiful for a long time
  • Colors are bright and opaque
  • Perfect for clear logos and larger prints
  • Widely used for merchandise and events

When is screen printing less suitable?

For small runs or designs that are frequently modified, screen printing is less flexible. Each color and version requires separate preparation.

It is therefore somewhat less practical for small quantities, but very strong for larger productions.

What is embroidery?

With embroidery, your design is not printed, but directly incorporated into the fabric with yarn.

This immediately gives a completely different look: something more chic, sturdier, and more durable.

When do you choose embroidery?

Embroidery is ideal when appearance and durability are important:

  • Luxurious and professional look
  • Stays beautiful for a long time, even after many washes
  • Adds texture and depth
  • Perfect for logos on polo shirts, hoodies, workwear, or caps

When is embroidery less suitable?

On very thin textiles, such as some T-shirts, embroidery can sometimes feel a bit heavier or cause the fabric to pull.

Designs with very small details or color gradients are also not always ideal for embroidery.

Which technique suits your design?

You just want to know: what's the best choice for me? That's logical. The choice often lies in the details of your design and how you will use it. Luckily, you don't have to figure that out yourself.
